Writer: Rev. Kevin K. AdamsRev. Kevin K. Adams

Disciples History Moment for February 23, 2025

Today, I will introduce you to two important women of our Disciple’s History during Black History Month: Sarah Lue Bostick and Dolores Highbaugh.

Sarah Lue Bostick was among the first African American women ordained to the Christian ministry in the late 19th century. She labored as a field worker for the Christian Woman’s Board of Missions and the National Christian Missionary Society among African American congregations in Arkansas, Missouri, Tennessee, Kansas, Texas, and Oklahoma. She carried on her successful work for over 40 years, until her retirement in 1938. She died in 1948.

Dolores Highbaugh is a lay leader who has provided essential leadership for Disciples following restructure. Highbaugh served on the 1975-77 moderator team of the General Assembly. She led interracial initiatives in her work with Disciples Women in the regional and general church and often served as an ecumenical representative, where she was typically the sole lay woman among white male theologians and clergy. Dolores has been an active member, lay leader, and elder for Park Manor Christian Church in Chicago for more than 50 years.
