Doing What’s Important

Mark 9:30-37

In the lectionary scripture from this past Sunday, Jesus is teaching the disciples, and teaching us, that true greatness in the kingdom of God involves embracing and serving those who are often overlooked and undervalued by society.

The true measure of greatness is not power, status, or wealth, but is humility and service to others. "Whoever wants to be first must be last of all and servant of all.” That's how Jesus understands greatness. He illustrated that we are created to be servants teaching us the importance of humility, vulnerability and weaknesses. Our weaknesses can become cracks through which the light of God can shine.

Jesus calls us to live and pursue the Greatness that comes from giving ourselves to God, being a servant and doing what is important.
