(A reflection from the sermon on Pet Blessing Sunday)
Hebrews 4:12-16
Earlier in this chapter of the book of Hebrews, we are reminded that the message of God must be met with responsive hearts. This responsiveness brings us to the central point of this passage … the living and active Word of God. But, the significance is easily missed when we think of the Word of God simply as a book. It is against this backdrop that the author of Hebrews speaks of the Word as “living and active,” having the capacity to penetrate the very soul and spirit of human beings … being laid bare! What is in view here is the spoken word in all its dynamic force, because no creature is hidden from God’s living and active grace.
Consider the creation story found in Genesis. The Good News is not only ours (the humans) to own! It is for our treasured fur babies as well, because God’s love is also for them. When God created them, God looked at what had been created and saw that it was good!
